Antonio Maria Marini
(Venice 1668–1725) and Gerolamo Brusaferro (Venice c. 1700–1760)
Two landscapes with religious staffage: 1. An angel presenting the Communion to St. Jerome in the desert, 2. Two angels presenting the Cross to the penitent Magdalene, oil on canvas, each 87 x 75 cm, framed,
Provenance: European private collection.
Daniele de Sarno Prignano lists several examples of the collaboration between the landscape painter Ant
onio Marini and the figure painter Gerolamo Brusaferro, such as a Landscape with St. Jerome in the Museo Civico in Belluno, whose landscape scenery is closely related to the present paintings, as well as a further Landscape with St. Jerome and a Temptation of St. Anthony, both in the Museo Civico in Padua. Brusaferro’s oeuvre was only treated monographically several years ago, which supplied new evidence for the artist’s collaboration with such landscape painters as Marini. The present paintings exemplify the high quality of these two artists’ joint works.
